Getting ready for YAM!

Yup, it's that time of year again!  YAM!  Last year I really went all out with a trivia question every day, a spirit week, and two big dress-up days.  Unfortunately, this year I feel like I can't really outshine that (due to time constraints at home ;) ), but do some other exciting things instead!  So, here's a sneak peek at my plans for YAM 2014!

Firstly, I'm going to do spirit days on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the month.  Here's the calendar I just made that will be going home with every student:

Second, I'm hoping that my Art Night will make up for the lack of trivia questions this year.  The 12th is our spring conferences night, and since I never have to schedule parent-teacher conferences, I figure this would be a good opportunity to get some parents involved with making art with their children.  If you remember from last year, I did a similar thing with the teaching faculty during YAM.  I plan on using my posters and leftover materials (the small canvases) for this art night.  Generally, the spring conferences tend to have poor attendance across the board, so I will either have enough materials for who shows up, or it will help bring in more parents to school!

The 28th is going to be a big dress-up day.  Last year I had great participation from faculty and students for my "dress like an artist" day, so I'm hoping for equal enthusiasm for "dress like an artwork" day!  I have enough leftovers from last year to give out prizes to the best dressed students, so I'm hoping this will be some incentive to get students involved in the day!

YAM: Dress Like Your Favorite Artist or Artwork

So here it is, our last YAM spirit day!  Today was dress like your favorite artist or artwork day and there were some really awesome costumes, especially from some of the teachers!!!  (The really funny part is that I did my makeup at home and then forgot that I had to stop and get gas on the way to work!  The little gas station on the way doesn't accept credit cards at the pump...you have to pay inside.  The women there know me well...all they said was, "Must be something going on at school today!")

Our principal is on the left...she's been waiting over a month to wear the dress she bought for today!

Here is the project 4th graders worked on.  Their teacher chose Van Gogh and their teacher incorporated it into their science unit of constellations!  Awesome!

This one is the 4th grade teacher's example.

YAM Bulletin Boards

Now that the science fair is over, I can have my YAM bulletin board up and running!

One of my favorite art memories! ;)

This is my YAM display in the library book case...

I'll be sure to share the final product of my YAM, interactive bulletin board towards the end of March!

YAM: Dress like Pop Art Day!

So today was the first dress-up day for YAM, not counting the spirit week (MondayTuesday & Wednesday, Thursday & Friday ).  Today was dress like pop art day!  I went all out, and a few others did as well!

I, obviously, went all out for Roy Lichtenstein, as another student did!

This class decided they wanted to dot their faces as well...a few wore some popular logos.  The two boys in the bottom left corner went Andy Warhol and they wore the same outfit but in different colors!  I was happy to see that someone did that!

There were a few other great outfits, however underneath all that make-up, I was trying my hardest not to fall flat on my face and sleep.  I should have taken a sick day today, because now I've almost completely lost my voice again, but I bought my pop art outfit just for today!  I had to wear it!

YAM Spirit Week: Thursday and Friday

Thursday was wear a warm or cool colored outfit...so I wore one of my favorite tops that has the cool colors on it!  (Didn't get any good photos that day of student outfits...)

Today was crazy pattern day...and let me tell you, there were some kids with awesome outfits!

This student's outfit definitely was a rival to mine!  (And, a model I am not!  lol )

Today we managed to get all of the bottle caps in place on our Starry Night mural.  I was hoping to have the kids get them glued on today, but the caulking is so hard to squeeze out.  Even the 6th grade boys were having a hard time squeezing it out!  If I'm bored this weekend, I may go in to glue some on so I can have my two tables back.

This awesome cupcake was brought to me by my student who takes private art lessons with me.  She told her mom that she wanted to make flower cup cakes for snack when it was her birthday, so her mom bought her some fondant!  Awesome cupcake...and tasty too!

YAM Spirit Week: Tuesday and Wednesday

To continue my spirit week photos, Tuesday was secondary color day...

I had to buy green pants just to pull off this dress-up day!

And today was complementary colors day.  The students did pretty well picking out outfits for today!

I wore a yellow shirt with a purple sweater....and these awesome shoes that have complementary colors on them!  Blue and orange!

Tonight was also parent-teacher conferences.  We had early dismissal at 11:30 for teachers and students, and then teachers had to be at school from 3:30-7:30.  While I didn't have any specific conferences, I invited the random students who were wandering the hallways to paint on our bottle cap mural.  On a high note, what few parents I did talk to told me that they were loving the dress up days and their kids were having fun with them!

Artistic Staff Development: Monday Meeting

Today's artistic staff development was successful!  No one complained...though there were some jokes about whose artwork might be worse than whose...and I found out we have quite a few artistic teachers on staff!
